The PGA Championship, organized by the Professional Golfers' Association of America (PGA of America), is one of the four major championships in professional golf, alongside the Masters Tournament, the U.S. Open, and The Open Championship.
The inaugural PGA Championship took place in 1916 at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, N.Y., where John McDermott emerged as the first champion. Throughout its history, the PGA Championship has been hosted at renowned golf courses nationwide, including iconic venues like Pebble Beach and Oakmont.
This year, the 2023 PGA Championship will be held at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y. Oak Hill has previously hosted the PGA Championship three times, most recently in 2013. Oak Hill has a challenging course layout, promising to deliver another rigorous test of golf skills this year. After 2023’s tournament, Oak Hill will have hosted the PGA Championship 4 times, second only to Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla.
Weather can certainly play an impact in golf tournaments. While major tournaments have been impacted by unexpected weather, some of the worst weather has occurred at non-majors, including the 1996 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am which was canceled mid-tournament after one of the holes took on so much water that it became unplayable and deemed inequitable to complete the tournament.
This year, Rochester is expecting to open play under much less dramatic weather, with sunny skies and cool highs in the mid-60s on Thursday. Temperatures are expected to warm up to the mid-70s on Friday, before rain makes an appearance on Saturday amid highs right around 70 degrees.
The PGA Championship remains a highly-esteemed tournament comprised of some of the best golfers in the world. We here at WeatherBug look forward to the 2023 PGA Championship, and wish the best of luck to the competitors!
