Extreme heat and fire danger will persist along the West Coast today though the record breaking heat will begin to weaken as clouds and rain arrive thanks to Tropical Storm Kay.
The ridge of high pressure that has been settled over the Southwest and Four Corners region the past several days will start to break down today. However, south to southwest winds associated with the high pressure system will continue to pump heat into the West Coast.
Southern California and parts of the Southwest will finally see a break in the heat later today into Saturday as cloud cover and rainfall associated with Tropical Storm Kay moves through the region.
Meanwhile, an upper-level weather disturbance will strengthen and push through northern Rockies into the Plains. It will lead to showers and thunderstorms along its path though dry weather will continue across the Northwest, California and Great Basin. The development of gusty winds will result in extremely critical fire danger across Washington, Oregon, northern California.
Temperatures could break daily and even monthly records across the Great Basin, Intermountain West and Plains as 90s and 100s infiltrated many locations. Temperatures will also be in the 110s across California’s Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys.
Excessive Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories cover most of California. Breezy winds and low humidity have led to Red Flag Warnings from Washington and Oregon to northern California.
High pressure begins to strengthen back over the Western U.S. this weekend. Unseasonably hot temperatures will continue in the Northwest and Great Basin as a result.
If outdoor activities cannot be avoided, make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated or make sure to take frequent breaks in air conditioning.
