Cooler air shifting out of Canada will keep a few folks across the Northeast chilly and snowy this weekend. Thankfully, as high pressure begins to shift eastward, the snow woes will diminish.
A diminishing clipper system over the Northeast coupled with the cooler air shifting out of the Great Lakes will foster lake-effect snow showers tonight with a couple snow squalls over Appalachian highlands. The main folks in line for fresh snow today include those located in the Ohio Valley into Pennsylvania as well as interior portions of the Northeast near the Great Lakes.
Interior locations will generally see a total of 3 inches of snow, but areas located closer to Lake Erie could see snow totals range between 2 to 5 inches. Cities at risk of the higher snow totals include Ashtabula, Ohio, Erie, Pa., Syracuse and Ithaca, N.Y., and this will likely lead to slippery travel conditions.
Winter Weather Advisories continue to extend off Lake Ontario into upstate New York and across the central Appalachians.
In addition to the snow, gusty winds are expected as Canadian high pressure shifts through the Northeast tonight. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph can be expected in portions of the Northeast.
If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of emergency. Be sure to have multiple ways to get the latest weather information from local TV, weather radio, or the WeatherBug app. With bitterly cold air in place, it is the time to check on the elderly, keep pets inside and dress in as many layers as possible to avoid hypothermia.
