Just because it`s the middle of winter doesn`t mean the outdoor fun has to stop. Despite the cold and shorter days, there are still many activities that will provide plenty of fun and exercise while you wait for spring to arrive.
Build a snowman. This one is perfect for the whole family. Remember that snowman-making works much better with a wet snow that will stick together easily. Just roll three giant snowballs that will form the base, torso and head of the snowman. Coal or buttons are perfect for his eyes and mouth, while you`ll need a carrot for his nose. Don`t forget to keep your creation warm with a scarf and winter hat!
Go skiing. You don`t have to live near the Rockies to enjoy a day on the slopes. Ski areas of various sizes are scattered throughout the northern U.S., and even in mountainous areas farther south. Most cater to skiers of all ability levels, from beginner to expert. Even if you don`t own your own equipment, most mountains have gear you can rent for the day. You can also sign up for ski classes that will eventually put the bunny slope in your rear-view mirror.
Go sledding. If skiing is a bit too expensive for you, sledding is a fun and inexpensive alternative. You can buy a plastic sled or inflatable tube for just a few dollars at most department stores. After that, just find a snow-covered hill at a friend`s house, a park, or even a local school. Not only is it fun to speed down the hill, but walking back up the hill before going again is a great workout. Also, don`t forget the sunscreen, because even though it`s winter, your face can still get burned after a few hours outside.
Go ice fishing. The first thing to remember is safety. Generally ice should be at least 6 inches thick before venturing out onto it. It`s also better to leave your vehicle onshore and only walk onto the ice. If you don`t have the luxury of an ice house to keep you out of the elements, make sure to dress extremely warm in multiple layers to fend off the cold while you sit still. Finally, don`t forget the snacks! Cold weather will make you hungry faster.
