Unseasonably Cold, Brisk Air Persists Over The North-Central U.S., East
October 17, 2024
By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Alyssa Robinette
Expect one more day of cold, brisk air over the north-central and eastern U.S. thanks to massive high pressure overhead.
Cold, Canadian high pressure will be settled over the nation’s midsection this morning and will then become settled over the eastern U.S. for the rest of today and Friday. This high pressure system will cause unseasonably cold weather to invade the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. Temperatures over the next couple of days will range from 5 to as much as 25 degrees below the normal for this time of year!
The cold will really be felt this morning from the Plains to the Eastern Seaboard. There will be numerous areas across the Appalachian Spine into the interior Northeast that report morning lows in the 20s. Otherwise, most places will have temperatures drop into the 30s and 40s. Even the Gulf Coast, Southeast and northern Florida will have temperatures in the 40s.
The National Weather Service has issued several Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories for this morning for parts of the Deep South, Southeast, and Northeast. These warnings and advisories are also found throughout the Midwest and Ohio Valley into portions of Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma.
Temperatures should rebound nicely for most areas this afternoon. The eastern two-thirds of the nation will generally see highs in the 50s and 60s. A chilly night is in store though tonight, as lows will drop into the 30s and 40s once again.
If you have any sensitive plants, it would be best to bring those inside or take steps to protect them outdoors. Precautions should also be taken to outdoor or exposed plumbing. Be sure to keep up with the latest weather alerts and cold temperature forecasts with WeatherBug.
