Heavy Rain Soaks the Southern U.S.

By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Rob Miller

Heavy rain will raise concerns of flooding across portions of the southern U.S. tonight.
An area of low pressure will move across portions of the southern Plains today. Southerly winds ahead of this low will bring plenty of tropical air northward and will collide with a drier air mass pushing southward from the Upper Midwest. The resulting clash of air masses will produce areas of heavy rain and locally gusty thunderstorms.
Flood Watches and Advisories are in place across northeastern Texas, southeastern Oklahoma, southwestern Arkansas, and northwestern Louisiana. Here, rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches of rainfall can be expected, much of which may fall in a short period of time and result in localized flooding. Localized rain amounts may even reach 3 inches in a few places!
To the south of this area, a few gusty thunderstorms will be possible throughout the day today across parts of the central High Plains and from north-central Texas into northern Louisiana. This is the area highlighted by a Marginal Risk for severe weather by the Storm Prediction Center.
Some cities at risk for severe weather this evening include Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, and Grand Prairie, Texas. Wind gusts of 45-60 mph will be possible, along with small hail.
If you are out and about, be sure to keep an eye to the sky and look out for rapidly changing cloud coverage. If you encounter flooded roadways, remember to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!” In some cases, the thunderstorm that leads to flooding at your location could be many miles away.
