Fall can be a great time to get outdoors and enjoy the more comfortable weather. One activity to enjoy outdoors during the fall is hiking. Here are some tips for your next hiking trip:

  • Check the trail conditions before heading out. Early season snows or severe weather could close off parts of the trail or may make hiking dangerous.
  • During the fall, the weather can change quickly. Always make sure to wear appropriate clothing and be aware of the weather forecast wherever you go hiking. You don’t want to get caught off guard by rapidly changing temperatures or dangerous weather such as thunderstorms.
  • Research the trail you are hiking. It is always a good idea to gauge how long a hike may take, where to exit, and the trail’s surroundings in case of severe weather or darkness.
  • Watch out for hunters. Fall brings about hunting season for many areas of the country. Make sure you are hiking in an area that is safe from hunters and welcome to humans.
  • Pack the appropriate tools for hiking safety! This include hiking shoes, layers of clothing, sunscreen, a first-aid kit, a flashlight, and more food and water than you think you may need. In case you get lost or don’t feel well, extra supplies are always a good thing to have outdoors.
  • Let someone know you are going hiking including where, when, and who else will be with you. In case of emergency, it is always a good idea to give information to a point of contact in case help is needed.
Hiking is a great activity outdoors with the arrival of beautiful fall foliage. However, it is important to stay safe and take precautions before heading out. Take these hiking tips with you out the door this fall!
