May is the cat’s meow of months, it is National Pet Month.
National Pet Month was established to promote the benefit of pet ownership, support pet adoption, promote responsible pet ownership and to make people aware of how animals contribute to society by working as companion animals.
Here are a few ways to celebrate the month:
- Adopt – Even if you have a pet or two, or three, you and your family probably can make a “forever home” for another dog, cat, bird, rabbit, lizard or other pets. Remember, consider adopting through a local shelter or rescue and always get the pet spay or neutered.
- Donate – Shelters and rescue organizations always need pet supplies. Check with your local organization to see what they need; it takes a lot of food to feed animals. Money allows shelters and rescue organizations to pay for essential medicine and veterinarian care.
- Volunteer: If you don’t have much money, you can always donate your time. Volunteering, if only a couple hours a month, will still help shelters and rescues find new homes for pets.
- Foster: Not sure about being a “forever home?” Consider taking care of animals temporarily until they are adopted into their own home.
- Play and have fun – Let’s not forget about our own furry family members. Take some time to play with them. Take Fido on a long walk or car ride!
- Become an Educated Role Model – Read and become an advocate for all pets. Teach your children the best ways to treat animals.
