Late-Season Snow, Ice Hits the Northern Tier

The calendar may have changed to April, but winter woes will continue across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest today.
A strengthening low pressure system will move out of the central Plains and into the Upper Midwest today. North of this low pressure system, winter air is hanging on and will bring a swath of snow and ice across the Dakotas to Wisconsin and Michigan today and tonight.
Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are found across the Dakotas into central and northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Michigan.
Several inches of snow are likely across eastern North Dakota, northeastern South Dakota through northern Minnesota. Snowfall of 2 to 8 inches will be common, but localized snow amounts of a foot or more will be possible over northeastern Minnesota.
In addition to the snow, a build up of ice will be possible. This will especially be true across northeastern South Dakota where Ice Storm Warnings are in effect. Ice accretion of 0.05-0.15" will be possible. Elsewhere, a few hundredths of an inch of ice will be possible across central Minnesota into northern Wisconsin and Michigan.
It’s never too early to prepare for inclement weather. Simply by having an emergency kit equipped with a weather radio, extra batteries, non-perishable food, water, clean clothes and blankets will go a long way in keeping your family safe, warm and protected. Be sure to check the WeatherBug App or your local weather stations to keep informed on the approaching weather.
