Tennessee Valley At Risk For Severe Storms Tonight
May 15, 2024
UPDATED by WeatherBug Meteorologists
The threat for severe weather continues tonight, with the Tennessee Valley being the main area of concern.
A low pressure system and associated cold front will be moving across the Tennessee Valley. Warm, very humid air will be in place ahead of the low pressure and cold front, while cooler, drier air filters in behind it. The collision of air masses will be where thunderstorms fire up tonight.
A Slight Risk is in effect for northern Alabama, northern Georgia, northwest South Carolina, and portions of central and eastern Tennessee. This includes Nashville and Chattanooga, Tenn., Huntsville, Ala., and Atlanta. Multi-cell storms and possibly supercells will look to form over the Tennessee Valley this afternoon and move into the southern Appalachians by the evening. Damaging wind gusts and hail will be the main threats, though a brief tornado or two is possible.
In addition to the severe thunderstorm threat, heavy rainfall causing a flooding threat is likely across the same basic area. With the threat of two to four inches of additional rainfall today with isolated higher amounts flooding will certainly be a threat. Remember, if you approach a flooded roadway, it is always best to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”
Make sure to frequently check WeatherBug for updates, as a watch can quickly turn into a warning upon imminent danger. It is important to stay prepared for active weather. Make sure you know the difference between a watch and a warning should they become issued. A watch means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to take place, whereas a warning means severe weather is imminent and you need to act fast to prevent damage to property or even loss of life. Remember, “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”
