It’s that time of the year again where the days are getting shorter and they’re getting colder! This means that it is prime time to prepare your home for any and all unfavorable winter weather conditions.

The main worry when it gets cold outside is the loss of heat. Winter storms can pack in all sorts of wintry threats such as heavy snowfall, ice and evening high winds. If robust enough, these effects can lead to the loss of power for days or even weeks. Here are a few things you can do to prepare before a storm blitzes through your area:
  • Replenish and restock your emergency supply of water and non-perishable food items. Any items that do not require power or heat are a bonus.
  • Have a way to store fuel for generators, cars and/or cooking instruments.
  • Make sure flashlights have fresh batteries and store new batteries in a place easily accessible.
  • Have an alternative way to remain warm such as a gas or wood stove or a fireplace.
  • Check and replace your fire extinguisher and smoke detectors.
  • Make sure all first aid kits are packed with any prescription or over-the-counter medication.
Alas, not all hope is lost if you get caught in a winter storm. Here are some things you can do in the midst of Mother Nature giving you the cold shoulder:
  • Remain indoors where it will be dry and warm.
  • Block any door openings or cracks in doors and windows. This will prevent cool air from seeping into your home.
  • Cover windows at night.
  • Remain nourished.
  • Make sure to wear multiple layers of clothing.
  • Exercise!
Remember, the best way to stay prepared is to be proactive. Following the aforementioned advice will help ensure safety in your home during the brutal winter months.
