Your phone is blasting an emergency weather alert, telling you a tornado is in your area and it’s time to take shelter, but you’re not sure where. Here are some tips on the safest place to be during a severe weather event.

  • The best place overall is in your basement or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows. This can be an interior closet, bathroom or even a center hallway. The more walls between you and the outside, the better.
  • Again, avoid windows at all costs as they can easily break from debris.
  • If possible, take shelter underneath a sturdy object, like a heavy table or workbench, for added protection.
  • Remember to protect your head as well. Examples include bicycle helmets, baseball helmets, skiing helmets, or motorcycle helmets.
  • Avoid staying in a mobile home at all costs as they can be easily destroyed by a tornado.
  • If you’re out in public, avoid staying in your car and find a nearby public building with a basement or one with an interior room on the lowest floor to shelter in.
Keeping these tidbits in the back of your head will help you find the safest location to shelter in the event a tornado touches down in your area.
