The Southern Plains will see an increased risk for severe weather later this evening into Monday morning.
A low pressure system developing over the Permian Basin will strengthen throughout the day today before slowly tracking across Texas. As this system becomes stronger, a low-level jet will bring shear and push moisture from the Gulf of Mexico northward. All of these ingredients will come together and create a favorable environment for severe thunderstorms.
The Storm Prediction Center currently has a Slight Risk for severe weather from west-central Texas to southwestern Oklahoma. Cities include Midland, Abilene, San Angelo, and Wichita Falls in Texas and Atlus and Lawton in Oklahoma. It's worth noting Fort Worth and Dallas may be affected by severe weather as well with thunderstorms slated to move over the city shortly after sunrise Monday.
The main threats will be damaging winds and a few tornadoes, but flash flooding will be a threat as well. Flood Watches are in effect over parts of northern Texas and central Oklahoma where 1 to 4 inches of rain could fall today and Monday.
