Scorching Heat Hits West; Still Hot Along The Gulf
August 16, 2023
UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Rob Miller
A cold front will restrict the worst of the heat to the Gulf Coast as temperatures continue to climb in the West.
As a ridge of high pressure builds over the western U.S. through midweek, strong heat will be felt across the Pacific Northwest. Excessive Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories can be found across Washington, Oregon, parts of California, western Idaho, and northern Montana. Temperatures here will climb into the middle 90s to middle 100s in the interior areas, with upper 80s to lower 90s along the coast.
Along the Gulf Coast, widespread 90s will be commonplace over the next few days, with a few low 100s likely late this week. Given plenty of humidity, heat indices will make it feel even more uncomfortable, climbing to a ridiculous 105 to 115 degrees or even a little higher most days! The only redeeming factor is that a cold front that has settled along the Gulf Coast will help keep the coverage of this extreme heat limited.
There remains Heat Advisories across southern and southeast Texas. San Antonio, Austin, and Houston are cities included in these warnings and advisories.
If you cannot avoid being outdoors, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in an air-conditioned room, and wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Make sure to check frequently on the elderly, young children, and NEVER, EVER leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle!
