Exercising is an important way to stay healthy, but when the cold winter months arrive, how can you maintain a balance between staying warm and not overheating? Here are a few important tips to keep you active outside during the winter.
These few simple winter dress tips will help you maintain your active lifestyle during the coldest part of the year while also feeling comfortable.
- Wear tight fitting clothing to keep warm and dry.
- The first layer you should put on should be made of polypropylene, silk, polyester, thermax, thinsulate or wool. These fabrics keep your body temperature steady while taking moisture away from your skin.
- Socks that contain wool blends such as SmartWool or even socks with the WrightSock logo will keep your feet warm while taking away moisture. Add a second pair of socks to prevent blisters.
- The next layer should be a bit thicker, but still allow sweat to evaporate. Fleece is a good mid-layer.
- The outer layer should block wind, allow moisture to escape and withstand wear and tear. This includes Gore-Tex jackets. Also, it might be a good idea if your jacket is reflective so drivers can see you during the dark mornings and early evenings.
- In extreme cold, wear a hat, mittens and gloves to prevent frostbite. If you get too warm while working out, simply remove your hat or gloves and the outer and/or mid-layers.
- For skiers and snowboarders, protect your eyes by wearing ski goggles or sunglasses.
- A helmet should be worn while skiing or snowboarding.
