Tropical Storm Oscar Passes Through Eastern Bahamas
October 22, 2024
UPDATED by WeatherBug Meteorologists
Oscar will continue to weaken as it accelerates northeastward through the eastern Bahamas today. Oscar's remnants may threaten Bermuda by the latter stages of the work week.
As of 11 a.m. EDT, Tropical Storm Oscar was located near 22.9 N and 74.1 W, or about 70 miles east-southeast of Long Island in the Bahamas. Oscar is packing top sustained winds of 40 mph and is moving northeast at 12 mph. Its minimum central pressure has risen to 1007 mb, or 29.74 inches of mercury.
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the southeastern Bahamas.
Oscar will trek northeast across the central and eastern Bahamas today. Tropical storm-force winds (39 to 73 mph) are expected across the southeastern Bahamas today. Additional rainfall totals of 1 to 4 inches are likely for the southeastern Bahamas as well as the Turks and Caicos Islands. This rainfall could cause localized flash flooding.
It will continue to move to the northeast on Wednesday, tracking towards Bermuda. However, it will lose all of its tropical characteristics and become a post-tropical cyclone. While Oscar will remain post-tropical, it could bring heavy rain and breezy winds to Bermuda later this week.
Although there isn’t a tropical system threatening U.S. interests at the moment, it is wise not let down your guard. This has been a particularly dangerous hurricane season, with five hurricanes making landfall along the Gulf Coast this year, including Hurricanes Helene and Milton in just the past few weeks. The season officially runs through November 30, and storms often occur during November and even during the off-season.
