The West will begin to sizzle under the August sun as temperatures rise early this week.
A broad area of high pressure aloft will strengthen for the next couple of days, putting expansive areas across the West into dangerous heat.
The National Weather Service has issued Heat Advisories from southern California and western Arizona to Washington state and northern Idaho. Extreme Heat Watches and Warnings are also in effect for portions of the West where temperatures could easily break the 100 degree mark.
Many lower elevation areas will feel temperatures rise into the upper 90s today and Tuesday with some valleys getting into the triple digits. A few daily temperature records could be tied or broken in the Mojave and Sonoran Desert including a forecast temperature of 116 degrees near Needles, California! This would flirt with the longstanding record of 117 degrees in 1888. Reno, Nev. could also get very close to their record of 102 degrees set in 1970 on Tuesday.
Fortunately, this heat wave should be relatively short-lived for many as thermometers start to cool somewhat by mid-week as the high pressure system weakens.
If you must go outdoors, prepare by staying hydrated and keep a watchful eye for any signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Wear the right clothing, such as loose-fitting, lightweight and breathable fabrics, and take many breaks within a cool and shaded area.
Make sure to take extra precautions for children and the elderly as they are more susceptible to heat-related illness. Never leave children or animals alone in a locked vehicle as it can become dangerous and potentially fatal.
