Western U.S. Contends With Dangerous Heat
Record-breaking heat will settle over the western U.S. this weekend into next week.
A strong high pressure system will settle over the West this weekend. As it does this, temperatures across the region will reach dangerous levels. Cities including Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Jose, Calif., Portland, Ore., and Seattle will feel the impact of the hot conditions.
Extreme Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories stretch across six states which include California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, and Idaho.
We will see some record high temperatures in jeopardy today as this ridge of high pressure hovers over the region. Nineties will be felt as far north as Idaho and eastern Washington state, while numerous spots along and west of the Rockies will see the mercury climb into triple digits. The Desert Southwest could even report temperatures as high as 115 degrees! Portland, Ore., could break the daily high record three days in row with max temperatures soaring near 100 degrees. Medford, Ore., Reno, Nev., and even Seattle could break daily records today and/or Sunday.
If you must go outdoors, prepare by staying hydrated and keep a watchful eye for any signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Wear the right clothing, such as loose-fitting, lightweight and breathable fabrics, and take many breaks within a cool and shaded area.
Make sure to take extra precautions for children and the elderly as they are more susceptible to heat-related illness. Never leave children or animals alone in a locked vehicle as it can become dangerous and potentially fatal.
