More Severe Storms in the Plains
A renewed risk for severe thunderstorms will expand across the northern High Plains into the central Plains today.

Fast winds aloft will move over a slow-moving cold front sinking southward across the Plains. With plenty of warm, unstable air found near this frontal boundary, damaging wind gusts and large hail will be the main concerns from thunderstorms today.

The government's Storm Prediction Center has placed a Slight Risk across southeastern Montana, eastern Wyoming, southwestern South Dakota, much of Nebraska, northeastern Colorado, western Iowa and extreme northwestern Missouri. Billings, Mont., Casper, Wyo., Rapid City, S.D., Omaha, Neb., and Des Moines, Iowa are at risk for severe storms today.

In addition to the severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall will also be possible in these areas. Localized rain amounts of up to 3 inches will be possible and may result in localized flooding. This is especially the case across portions of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.

Make sure to know the difference between a watch and a warning should they become issued. A watch means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to occur and to be on alert for any rapidly changing conditions. A warning means that severe weather is imminent, and you should act fast to remain safe.

The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water and non-perishable food items should you be without power for long periods of time. Also, check the WeatherBug app frequently for any updates on today’s severe weather. Remember, “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”
