Snowfall forecast through Sunday A.M.
A parade of snow storms will continue to move across the northern U.S., bringing a few ribbons of snow from the northern Rockies to the Midwest and into the Mid-Atlantic through the weekend. For those downwind of the Great Lakes, lake-effect snow will continue.

A low pressure system will start to advance eastward from the northern Rockies today and Saturday, dusting much of North Dakota and Montana in a 4-to-8 inch snowfall.

This low-pressure system will make its way out of the northern Plains and trek eastward into the Midwest, Ohio Valley, central Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic, and eventually to the coastal Northeast. This system will be quick moving but will drop impactful snowfall on travel for Saturday and Sunday. The central portions of South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana will see a stripe of 2-to-5 inch snowfall on Saturday. Saturday night, heavier amounts are forecasted for much of Ohio, central to northern West Virginia, and western Pennsylvania with 3-to-6 inches possible and locally higher amounts in the central Appalachians of West Virginia.

On Sunday, this system will weaken but will still provide a ribbon of 1-to-4 inches of snow for Maryland, Deleware, eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, southern New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and eastern Massachusetts. Locally higher amounts of 5-to-6 inches cannot be ruled out for portions of Long Island and New Jersey.

Winter Storm Warnings are in place across much of Montana, with Winter Weather Advisories set to go in effect tonight or tomorrow across central South Dakota, central Iowa, central Illinois, central Indiana, central to northeastern Ohio, northern Kentucky, and western Pennsylvania. More Winter Storm Warnings will go in effect Saturday afternoon in east-central Indiana, southern Ohio, central to northern West Virginia, southwestern Pennsylvania, and far northwestern Maryland. On Sunday, Winter Weather Advisories are expected to go in effect for the northern Mid-Atlantic and coastal portions of the Northeast excluding Maine.

As if that weren’t enough, an Arctic air mass will lead to a resurgence of lake effect snow this weekend across the Great Lakes. The lake-effect snow machine will keep chugging along the shores of the eastern Great Lakes. Snow accumulations of around 6 to 12 inches will blanket the primary snowbelts of northeastern Ohio, northwestern Pennsylvania, and southwestern and northern New York. Here, Lake Effect Snow Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect.

It’s never too early to have a supply kit packed in case of inclement weather. A simple kit including a weather radio, water, blankets, batteries, and non-perishable food items will go a long way in the event of a power outage. It’s always best to avoid travel in rough weather as the roads will be dangerous.
