After a mild end to 2024 for many in the Northeast, the weather pattern to start the new year will be turning much colder and even snowier to close out the week.
A broad area of low pressure will move over New England tonight. The gusty northerly and northwesterly winds behind this low pressure will send a much colder air mass across the Great Lakes and into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic through Friday.
The result will be the return of colder temperatures and lake effect snow today into Friday.
To the east of Lakes Erie and Ontario, snow accumulations of 3 to 8 inches will be possible through Friday morning, while localized snow accumulation of 1 to 2 feet will be possible in any more persistent snow band.
As a result, Lake Effect Snow Warnings are in effect across northeastern Ohio, northwestern Pennsylvania, and western and northern New York. In addition, Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are found over mountains of West Virginia, western Maryland, and southwestern Pennsylvania.
Winter Weather Advisories are also in effect across northern and western Maine into northern New Hampshire, and northern Vermont where a few Winter Storm Warnings are also found.
In addition to the snow, Wind Advisories span the southern and central Appalachians into the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England. Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph are expected throughout the day today, while isolated wind gusts of 55-60 mph will be possible, especially over the higher elevations and at the coast. These winds will make travel difficult throughout the region.
It’s never too early to prepare for inclement weather. Simply having an emergency kit equipped with a weather radio, extra batteries, non-perishable food, water, clean clothes and blankets will go a long way in keeping your family safe, warm and protected. Be sure to check the WeatherBug App or your local weather stations to keep informed on the approaching weather.
